The Weight Of Water

Water is one of the essential elements of life. 60% of the human body is comprised of water. We need water for plants to grow, we need water to clean and we need water to stay alive.

The majority of the planet earth is covered with water.

How Much Does a Pint of Water Weigh

A pint of water weighs roughly 16 fluid ounces.

This information also brings us to the question of whether all water weighs the same amount. Water can be fresh or salty, it can be distilled, it can be frozen or turned into steam.

What elements change the weight of water?

Salt-Water VS Fresh Water

Saltwater is found in the seas and oceans. There is more saltwater on earth than there is freshwater. Humans cannot drink salt water but many animals live in this type of water.

The salt in the water content increases the density of the water. When the density is increased the weight and buoyancy of the water are changed.

Freshwater that contains no salt weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. That is the equivalent of about 8.3 pounds per gallon.

Saltwater weighs about 64.1 pounds per cubic foot. That is the equivalent of about 8.6 pounds per gallon.

Buoyancy is what makes an object weigh less and be easier to pick up when it is submerged in water.

In saltwater, an object has an increased amount of buoyancy. It is easier to float in saltwater because the buoyancy difference in the water helps you to stay afloat.

Two forces are at work when an object is in water.

The downward force is the same as the weight of the item and the upward force is the same as the weight of the water the item is displacing.

Water has to move out of the way for an item to take up a space, and the displacement of that water lifts the item and makes it weigh less and be easier to lift.

Distilled Water

Distilling water will not change the actual density or weight of the liquid. It does change the taste of the water.

The Changes In Water Weight

The weight of water is determined by the density of the liquid. The denser the water is the heavier it is.

Cold water is denser than warm water. That is why a gallon of water at a 5000 F temperature would weigh about 8.3 pounds while the same gallon of water at a 20000 F temperature would weigh 8.03 pounds.

The temperature changes in water can increase the weight of a gallon of water from 8.345 pounds to closer to 9.71 pounds.

While chilling water increases the density and can increase the weight completely freezing water into ice lessens the weight of the water.

An equal amount of liquid water and ice, say one cup, would not weigh the same amount. The frozen ice would weigh less than the liquid water.

When you freeze water into ice one gallon of water will turn into 1.090 gallons of ice. That is why if you weigh a cup of water and a cup of ice the ice weighs less.

When you weigh a cup of water against the cup of ice, the cup of ice is actually made up of less liquid.

You have undoubtedly noticed that ice placed in a glass of water starts out floating. As the ice starts to melt it starts to sink to the bottom of the container.

This sinking of the ice is caused because the amount the ice weighs increases as it melts and the density of the cube changes.

If you think it through you will see that water in its solid form does not lose weight, it loses volume. Ice is not lighter than water, the two items are in different volumes so comparing them equally is not possible.

That is like comparing apples to oranges. They are both fruit, but they are very different from each other.
